Matt Katz has taught Clay and Glaze studies at the world renowned New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University for over 15 years. He follows in the footsteps of trailblazers like Daniel Rhodes, Val Cushing, John Gill & Bill Carty, teaching these subjects. Matt's courses are ready to launch at a moments notice. Our courses have been through Alfred University's rigorous C&T committee and meet their standards of international ceramic education excellence. We can provide you with all the documentation that you may need to add our courses to your department's curriculum.
Matt has made it the goal of his career to make the complex subject of material science digestible and understandable for the artist. Matt has a B.F.A. from Alfred University and an M.F.A. from the University of Colorado- Boulder, both in ceramic art. He understands the challenges of making pottery and sculpture that face the student and working artist. Matt also worked for 20 years as a research scientist and industrial consultant in the Ceramic Engineering department at Alfred University.
Matt's experience as a maker, scientist, consultant and teacher, gives him a singular perspective on what ceramics artists need and how they learn.

Our courses are based on the 15 week academic calendar. Each course has 13 on demand, 1.5 hour lectures and two review/exam weeks. as well as weekly (or bi-weekly) live, online discussions. We utilize regular, live, online discussions as well as text based forums to keep the lines of communication open. We want the students to have access to information in as many formats as possible.
We compliment online learning with real world experimentation. Students will complete traditional labs provided by Matt, onsite. All that is required from the department is a glaze lab, firings and a display space for results. Students will also work with Matt on the professional practices skills, of documenting, writing, photographing, information layout, public speaking, and research skills.
Students will learn about Geology, Chemistry, Ceramic Materials, Ceramic Science, The Unity Molecular, Formula, Glaze Durability, Glaze Temperature, Firings, Special Effect Glazes, Glaze Flaws, Glaze Colors and a lot more.
CMW's online course has been an excellent addition to the MN NICE curriculum. Students are taught an understanding of how elements work together chemically to create glazes. Materials are presented in a direct, digestible manner using simple analogies to illustrate complex concepts.

Class content is hosted on our private server and ready for deployment at any time. We also have all documents ready to go for departmental approval.
Our independent, online structure allows for our flexibility to meet your needs. We are structured so that we can offer as multiple classes per semester. If your program's schedule has less freedom we can offer one course every fourth semester. Let us know your needs and we can work with you.
