After years of teaching ceramic materials courses in a tradition classroom lecture, Matt Katz developed and designed the Ceramic Material Workshop specifically for online educational access. These innovative courses have proved highly successful; student evaluations consistently praised Matt for his knowledge of ceramic materials and their applications and applauded him for his concise and personable presentation of challenging technical content. The online format proved exceptionally conducive to robust group interaction and discussion. I highly recommend these classes.

Our courses have been deployed at some of the leading ceramic art programs. Courses are taught fully online, with labs, provided by us and completed onsite, allowing your department the benefit of adding world class courses, with very low workload for you.
Ceramic Materials Workshop has crafted course work that works perfectly for students. Combining recorded lectures, live online video discussion, optional on campus visits, readings, writing, exams, and labs catered to your academic program. The student has a rich and through academic experience. The online academic experience is revolutionary for a complicated subject like ceramic materials. It enables the student to access the class, on their terms, when they feel most responsive to input in a comfortable environment. It also allows for multiple viewings, allowing students to rewind and re-engage with content, they don't feel they have fully absorbed.
Matt Katz has taught Clay and Glaze studies at the world renowned New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University for over 15 years. He follows in the footsteps of trailblazers like Daniel Rhodes, Val Cushing, John Gill & Bill Carty, teaching these subjects. Our courses have been through Alfred University's rigorous C&T committee and meet their standards of international ceramic education excellence. We can provide you with all the documentation that you may need to add our courses to your department's curriculum.
Matt has made it the goal of his career to make the complex subject of material science digestible and understandable for the artist. Matt has a B.F.A. from Alfred University and an M.F.A. from the University of Colorado- Boulder, both in ceramic art. Matt's experience as a maker, scientist, consultant and teacher, gives him a singular perspective on what ceramics artists need and how they learn.
CMW's online courses have been great for Montana State. Our students appreciate the comprehensive content and the flexibility of the online format. We appreciate being able to add a valuable course to our curriculum, without having to sacrifice any existing courses.

Our courses are based on the 15 week academic calendar. Each course has 13 on demand, 1.5 hour lectures and two review/exam weeks, as well as weekly (or every other week) live, online discussions. We utilize regular, live, online discussions as well as text based forums to keep the lines of communication open. We want the students to have access to information in as many formats as possible.
We compliment online learning with real world experimentation. Students will complete traditional labs provided by Matt, onsite. All that is required from the department is a glaze lab, firings and a display space for results. Students will also work with Matt on the professional practices skills, of documenting, writing, photographing, information layout, public speaking, and research skills.
Students will learn about Geology, Chemistry, Ceramic Materials, Ceramic Science, The Unity Molecular, Formula, Glaze Durability, Glaze Temperature, Firings, Special Effect Glazes, Glaze Flaws, Glaze Colors and a lot more.
CMW's online course has been an excellent addition to the MN NICE curriculum. Students are taught an understanding of how elements work together chemically to create glazes. Materials are presented in a direct, digestible manner using simple analogies to illustrate complex concepts.
